There’s no shortage of headlines – and compliments, it seems – ahead of Manchester City’s return to Champions League action this evening.

Three weeks on from the 3-1 win over Barcelona, Pep Guardiola’s side resume their European campaign but with the impressive nature of their last showing still in people’s minds, not least of all their latest opponents.

There’s been kind words aplenty from the German camp ahead of tonight’s game at Borussia-Park, with manager André Schubert leading the praise.

The Gladbach boss acknowledged the star quality of the Blues squad as he spoke to the media at Tuesday’s pre-match press conference.

Goal carry Schubert’s quotes, who said: “We had learned our lessons from that game, but that does not change the fact that City have an incredibly strong squad. Their pressing is really high, you saw that in their home win over Barcelona.

has put his stamp on Manchester City already, but of course you need great individual quality to play in his system. City have that in abundance.

“We are not going to try and pull something extraordinary out of the hat, it is about looking to contain Man City as best we can.”

Likewise, Schubert’s full back, Fabian Johnson, shares his manager’s belief that City will pose another tough test for the home side.

Quoted in the Mirror, the American told journalists: “Of course, it’s going to be hard work. We will need to perform at our very best to compete with an opponent like them.

“City had an outstanding squad last season with many strong individual players. Now they also have a world-class coach in Pep Guardiola.

“I think you can see what he is trying to do. They now move it about even better than before and that obviously makes them more dangerous.”

Of course it’s not only Wednesday night’s protagonists who are having their say ahead of kick off.

Stuart Brennan of the Manchester Evening News has considered the game’s key talking points and believes it’s the perfect catalyst for Sergio Aguero to kick-start the kind of goal scoring run he’s famed for.

“As a player who has usually scored in bunches, now would be a good time for him (Aguero) to get back in the groove,” writes Brennan.

“A few goals from him could make all the difference to City’s season with Champions League qualification, plus big league games against Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool in December.”
