A Toni Duggan hat-trick moved Man City Women to within three points of FA WSL Spring Series leaders Liverpool.
The Blues claimed a dominant 3-0 victory at the Stoke Gifford Stadium, handing Nick Cushing’s side their second consecutive away win and maintaining their unbeaten run in the competition.
Playing their second game in three days, a much-changed City started brightly, completely dominating the first half.
Duggan almost opened the scoring on 13 minutes, cutting inside and striking the bar. The ball fell to Nikita Parris, who bagged a brace in the five-goal thriller at Reading, but the forward poked the rebound wide.
Duggan went close again soon after, trying her luck from distance but watching her effort sail just over.
The clash sparked into life minutes before the break as City broke the deadlock. Izzy Christiansen floated an inch-perfect ball to Parris, who looked up, saw Duggan at the backpost and fired a cross across goal for the striker to convert.
Bristol almost found an immediate response as Chloe Arthur forced Marie Hourihan into a diving stop, while at the other end, Demi Stokes was unfortunate to see her attempt deflect just wide in the last major action of the half.
City continued where they left off after the break. Parris hit the post with a left-footed effort with Duggan’s rebound blocked before referee Savvas Yianni awarded the Blues a penalty.
Once again, a Megan Campbell long throw-in caused havoc in the box and handball was given. Duggan stepped up and made no mistake from the spot.
The striker netted her third before the hour-mark, collecting Parris’ through-ball and squeezing the ball past Caitlin Leach to cap an excellent individual display.
Still hungry, Duggan almost grabbed a fourth but Leach tipped onto the post and Jodie Brett cleared off the line.
Parris almost wrote her name onto the scoresheet, turning her defender and letting fly but it was comfortable for Leach.
What it means…
Reigning champions City rise to second in the table, with a game in hand over Liverpool.
Continuing to rotate his squad in the competition and with more than half an eye on Saturday’s FA Cup final, Cushing made seven changes to the side that edged Sunday’s five-goal thriller at Reading.
Keira Walsh captained the side in her defensive midfield role, behind Christiansen and Kosovare Asllani.
Mel Lawley and Parris operated on the wings, while Duggan led the line upfront.
