Fernandinho says he is more than happy to have emerged as Manchester City’s own flexible friend over the past few months.
The Brazilian midfielder’s versatility has long been one of the many strengths of his all-round game.
And a series of injuries and suspensions over the past few months have seen City manager Pep Guardiola look to utilise Fernandinho’s adaptability with the 31-year-old having been deployed at both right-back and left-back, in addition to his trademark holding role as well as operating in other areas in the City engine room.
And Fernandinho believes his flexibility in carrying out different roles is a vital component in any modern-day squad – especially when a demanding season reaches its crucial final stages.
“I believe that’s important (to have players who can adapt to different positions) because sometimes we have weeks, like the one we ended up without two wingers due to injury, and when you have players that are capable to play in those positions, that makes things easier for the manager,” said Fernandinho.
“So he can build up the team with a lot more flexibility and it is important to have such players in your team.”
Fernandinho is currently away on World Cup qualifying duty with Brazil, who play Uruguay tonight and then face Paraguay early next week.
But when he and his fellow international colleagues return to Manchester, it will be for the vital final eight weeks of the season.
As well as 10 crucial Premier League matches, including games against Arsenal, leaders Chelsea and Manchester United, City also have an FA Cup semi-final against Arsenal to look forward to in late April.
And Fernandinho says the ability to play anywhere if asked – which has served him well since his days as a junior starting out in the game – can serve City well once again, if required.
“I knew about these qualities because when I was 15-years-old, I experienced playing in several positions and I always did quite well, I can adapt well in those functions,” Fernandinho added.
“For me it was not a surprise and I hope to always be available to help the best way I can, in different positions, if necessary.”
