Confederations Cup heartbreak for Claudio Bravo

BRAVO: Final heartbreak

BRAVO: Final heartbreak

It was Confederations Cup Final heartbreak for Claudio Bravo’s Chile side who lost 1-0 to Germany on Sunday evening in St. Petersburg.

It was the second meeting between La Roja and Die Mannschaft in this summer’s competition following a 1-1 group stage clash last month however this time Joachim Low’s side edged a fiercely competitive affair to claim their first ever Confederations Cup to add to an already glittering cabinet of international honours, as well as moving them up to number one in the FIFA World Rankings.

Lars Stindl side-footed home after 20 minutes following a horrific error from Marcelo Diaz who failed to spot Timo Werner over his shoulder leaving Bravo hopelessly exposed. It was the most basic of mistakes which unravelled what was an excellent start from the Chileans.

Talk ahead of the game was all about the Claudio Bravo following his triple penalty save heroics against Portugal in last week’s semi-final and the City stopper, who claimed the tournament's Golden Glove award, looked assured throughout against Germany – the pick of his saves coming on the stroke of half time to deny Julian Draxler’s acute angled drive which would have undoubtedly been a killer goal.

Despite a spirited second half showing from Chile, they just couldn’t break down a stubborn Germany resolve to force extra time.

Earlier in the day Bernardo Silva was rested as Portugal came from behind to beat Mexico 2-1 in Moscow in the third place play-off game.
